Tools of the Craft… Juicers and Blenders, Oh my!

robert Equipment

If there is one thing I have learned over the years in my pursuit of being Genesis Healthy, it is that you need serious, commercial-grade, small appliances! I’m talking heavy-duty beasts like the Omega J8006 Masticating Juicer, and the Vita-Mix Blender. The trash dump is full of failed appliances that lacked the power and longevity serious health seekers need. Don’t buy cheap like I used to do, you really do get what you pay for! Wait for a SALE and buy it!

Juicers that REALLY juice!

Masticating Juicers

There are two main types of juicers: 1. masticating, and 2. centrifugal. Each has its pros -v- cons. I personally own BOTH types and use each one. The masticating juicer is the master of getting every last drop of juice out of most fruits, greens, and vegetables. It excels at juicing green, leafy vegetables, like kale, spinach, and chard; and greens, like wheatgrass, as well as most other fibrous fruits and vegetables. It is easily the most effective juicer in general, however, it is a lot SLOWER than the spinning centrifugal juicers, and the feed chutes are often smaller, requiring most items to be cut up into smaller pieces. The exception is the vertical-feed Omega below. A Masticating juicer does not do well with soft fruits. Too mushy! There are tricks to doing soft, juicy fruits I will mention later. Below is my chosen PRIMARY juicer, the Omega J8006. I have linked to other excellent masticating juicers as well…

Centrifugal Juicers, the jet-speed juicers…

The centrifugal juicers have a shredding disk and fine-screen mesh that spins at crazy fast RPM’s and literally “spins” the juice out of the shredded food bits. These juicers are what most people are familiar with, and most know the loud, whining motor sounds they make, yet the best are far quieter than the cheaper alternatives. Centrifugal juicers are awesome at juicing “soft & juicy” fruits and vegetables, but they do not do so well on leafy greens, like kale, lettuce, and spinach. They will not do wheatgrass at all. Their leafy greens weakness is due to their design that allows green leaves of lettuce and spinach to slip under gaps in the feed chute and not be sufficiently shredded to allow the centrifugal force of the spinning mesh dish to extract the full juice it contains. It works very inefficiently on leafy greens because of this design weakness, which means that more leafy greens are going to the waste chute poorly juiced. They work OK, but don’t expect more than the design can deliver. Or get a masticating juicer as well! It’s worth it!

Their speed in making juice is by far their BEST feature! These juicers will process a lot of produce really fast. For most “juicy” produce, they are very efficient at juicing. Their feed chutes are also larger, so you can fit more and bigger produce into the feed chute at one time. While technically the juice may be less superior than a masticating juicer due to the added heat and air (oxidation) induced into the juice, I think the benefits of getting that LIFE ELIXER juice into your bodies and cells far outweigh the degradation that may, to some extent, happen in the process.

The juicer I own is a Breville Juice Fountain. Breville makes many models of juicers, and my experience has always been that they are quality, well-performing juicers. But Breville is not the only quality juicer, there are many nowadays, too many to list. I will list below some of my favorites that you can get through my Amazon links below. Juicing Tips & Tricks!

  • When juicing soft, wet fruits and vegetables in a masticating juicer, feed fibrous items, like a beet, carrot or celery, after a soft, wet item. The fibrous item will help mix with and push through the mushy item before it. Cycle soft and fibrous throughout the juicing process.
  • In a centrifugal juicer, try to fill the feed chute! Add slender items to open spaces in the feed chute between bigger items. This keeps the items from tilting or bouncing and not getting properly shredded.
  • Ball or wrap up leafy greens! This helps the juicer properly shred or masticate these thin, flat, flexible items. Fence wrap some celery stalks around the leafy greens to keep the bundled greens together.
  • If you don’t mind a more fibrous juice in a masticating juicer, push down and stir the juice foam and froth through the screen filter into the juice container. Otherwise, have a spoon ready to scoop off the foam and froth as needed to keep the juicing process going.
  • PRE-WASH and PROCESS! So much easier to start a juice when everything is ready to go! Takes away the lazy or tired excuse…
  • Store juices in GLASS ideally, stainless steel secondly… Canning jars make excellent juice transporters!
